I’m always delighted to lead workshops – whether for institutions or private groups – and to tutor individuals of all ages and levels of experience. To enquire about my availability, simply contact me here.
In 2013, 2014 and 2016 I’ve run creative writing workshops for diverse groups of participants on behalf of the tri-borough team based at The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The sessions focused on harnessing the narrative potential of different arts. My first workshops were on photography in writing, drawing on examples from works by W.G. Sebald, Carol Shields, Penelope Lively and Rachel Seiffert.
My last workshop for RBKC was centred on music in writing, with reference to authors as diverse as E.M. Forster, Marcel Proust and James Joyce to Ann Patchett, Vikram Seth, Yasmina Reza, Orhan Pamuk, Julian Barnes, James Meek and Amit Chaudhuri.
I’ve run comparable workshops in the autumn of 2016 at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London and at the Annual Conference of NAWE, the National Association of Writers in Education, in Stratford-upon-Avon.
It’s been an honour to be invited to present also at NAWE2018, where I’ve taught about art and artefacts in fiction:
In 2019 I ran a seminar and workshop at Middlesex University for students on the MA/PG Diploma course in Writing for Creative and Professional Practice. The session focused on the uses of collectible artefacts in writing.
All of the above workshops are based on my research into the uses of art and artefacts for narrative purposes: during my MA at Goldsmiths I focused on A.S. Byatt’s technique; I subsequently extended my study to additional authors and art forms. These insights have been invaluable to my own writing, as the presence of art, artefacts and music throughout That Summer in Puglia attests.
On my blog you’ll find posts about various aspects of creative writing, such as:
- What can writers learn from a composer?
- Lightness of thoughtfulness: why aspire to it?
- Why a dramatic monologue for ‘That Summer in Puglia’?
